FUMC Featured on “The Voice of Wellspring Living”!

Good morning, ladies! I have great news! A few weeks ago, Wellspring Living contacted us and asked for a submission to their blog. I couldn’t wait to brag on how fired up y’all have been about supporting their organization! The blog went live this morning, and I wanted to make sure you all got to see it!

Via The Voice of Wellspring Living Blog:

Lawrenceville First United Methodist staff member Whitney Ford has been working around the clock to raise funds for and bring awareness to Wellspring Living. She wrote a post about her church’s fundraiser campaign, and excitedly encouraged everyone reading to get involved.

The Women’s Ministry at First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville has been busy in 2012! After hearing about the work Wellspring Living does at a Women’s Ministry event earlier this year, our women have made supporting Wellspring Living their focus. They have set the goal of raising $5,000 to benefit the Wellspring Living Women’s program. At the close of June, we had raised just over half of what we need to meet that goal! Our fundraising techniques are simple and fun, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to share with you how we’re doing it!

We kicked off our fundraising endeavor by inviting a Wellspring Living representative to speak to our women’s ministry, and took a love offering following the talk. As a side note, this event also included a “bring one, take one” accessory swap. Any leftover accessories were donated to the Wellspring Treasures store to be sold or used for Creations from Donations. The event was a huge success; so much so that we are holding a second event in the fall!

Secondly, nearly all of our ladies’ small groups have either read books about trafficking, or had a speaker visit their small group in efforts to raise awareness around the issues of abuse and trafficking. Some of these groups have taken love offerings among themselves or set up tables on Sunday mornings to accept donations from church members.

Finally, Wellspring Living has graciously provided us with a sampling of their fabulous t-shirts, and let me tell you, they have been absolutely FLYING off the shelf! The t-shirts are extremely popular among our youth girls, so when a youth group from Mississippi teamed up with our own youth group to tackle a mission project, we took advantage of the opportunity! During their down time, we gave the kids an overview of the work that Wellspring Living does, educated them about trafficking warning signs, and had an open time for Q&A. The kids were so attentive, had a million questions, and were completely fired up afterwards. When we offered t-shirts up for purchase the next day, we raised over $500 in thirty minutes!

This year’s activities are adding up and so are the donations, helping us to reach our goal of $5000! We are already making plans with Wellspring Living for next year, and can’t wait to see how God will grow this program within our church and our community!

I want to encourage you all to support Wellspring Living in your own creative way. They are so helpful and gracious, and will bend over backwards to ensure that your organization has the information, tools and resources that it needs to host a successful event. We have been blessed to see the Lord work through our projects, and believe that through him all things are possible.

Update: To date we have raised nearly $3600! If you would like to donate, volunteer,
or purchase a t-shirt, contact Whitney Bexley at or 770-963-0386, ext 124.

Write to Restore

“You’re worthless. You’ll never amount to anything. This is all you will ever be good for.”

These are just a few of the words the Wellspring Living girls and women have heard before entering the safety and security of Wellspring Living to begin their journey of healing.

This healing takes time.  It takes words of encouragement, praise, prayer and supportYOU can be part of their healing today.

Words are so important to a girl. Every girl needs to feel loved, supported, and guided. She needs to be told she is beautiful, smart, and enough. Wellspring Living is confronting the issue of childhood sexual abuse and exploitation through awareness, training and treatment programs for women and girls. While we cannot change these girls’ pasts, we can help write a new story for their futures.

Wellspring Living desires to unite the metro Atlanta community to write simple love letters of encouragement to girls who need it most. In a simple letter from a female figure, a girl’s life can be changed. With a support system of like-minded women, we hope to allow the girls at Wellspring Living to see that they are special and worthy of love, by even a complete stranger. We believe your letter will help girls and women create a healthy picture of the community outside of Wellspring Living and know that there is a large community of people who want nothing more of them but to love and encourage them. We cannot think of a better way to cover them with God’s love than with the words of His body covering them with truth. So, thank you in advance for giving such a crucial gift to their hearts with your words of encouragement.

Below you will find the guidelines for your letters. We invite you to gather in your next small group, prayer team or quiet time at home we invite you to write a word of encouragement. We desire to unite the metro Atlanta community to write simple love letters of encouragement to girls who need it most.

Your letter will help girls and women create a healthy picture of the community outside of Wellspring Living and know that there is a large community of people who want nothing more of them but to love and encourage them. We cannot think of a better way to cover them with God’s love than with the words of His body covering them with truth. So, thank you in advance for giving such a crucial gift to their hearts with your words of encouragement.

How can you help?

It’s easy. Write a letter and share your support and encouragement. You can share your letters two different ways.
1. Write a hand-written note. You can mail letters to:
Wellspring Living
c/o Write to Restore

Tyrone, GA 30290

2. Submit a note online. Visit our Google form and share your words of love or go to and follow the links.

A few things to remember when writing a letter:

  • Please note that these letters are for our girls and women, but we may also use some of the content for media purposes and blog postings. If you are uncomfortable with us sharing excerpts from your letters, please mark so on the Google form or make a note on your envelope.
  • All hand-written letters must remain opened and unsealed. Our staff will read each letter before giving it to a woman or girl.
  • Letters should be encouraging, full of truth and Scripture, such as:
They are in a safe environment
    They are seen by God
    They are loved
    They have a purpose
They are courageous and strong for taking this step toward healing
    They are not alone
  • Acknowledge that things have happened but then share truths to counter their thoughts and renew their minds.

Possible Scriptures to Include in Your Letter:

  • Jeremiah 29:11-14 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
  • Eph 3:16-19 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your heart as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
  • 1 John 3:1 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!
  • Zephaniah 3:17 For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
  • Jeremiah 31:3 I have loved you with a love that lasts forever. And so with unfailing love, I have drawn you to myself.
  • 1 John 4:9-10 This is how the love of God is revealed to us: God has sent his only Son into the world so that we can live through him. This is love: it is not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son as the sacrifice that deals with our sins.
  • Lamentations 3:22-25 The faithful love of the LORD never ends His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!” The LORD is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.
  • Romans 15:13 I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Romans 8:37-39 In all these things we have complete victory through him who loved us! For I am certain that nothing can separate us from his love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below—there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • Colossians 1:3 We always pray for you, and we give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ

What Happens in Vegas

Submitted by Linda Allen

Life sure is funny sometimes!  You just never know what might happen in the most unlikely of places. And the BIG question is…are we ready and willing?

It all happened on a recent trip to Las Vegas to stay at Caesar’s Palace with my hubby for a trade show he needed to attend.  And if you know me, I am always up for a trip, so of course, I tagged along.  The plan was for him to work for a few days, and then we were heading to the Grand Canyon which has been on our bucket list for many years.

We arrived on a Sunday early morning Vegas time, and my hubby had a business meeting right away. I eagerly looked forward to a little R&R by the pool, with a book that I had recently started reading and was already captivated by it!  When I arrived at the pool, it was PACKED—hardly any chairs were available unless you wanted to step over a lot of people and their stuff…as I stood there surveying the situation, I see a lady start to gather her things and her chair was on the end of a row—Yay!!!  No need to bother a lot of people by climbing over them–As I made my way over to the chair, she left before I arrived, and there was a man laying in the chair beside the chair she just vacated.  I kindly asked if I might have the chair, and he replied, “Sure—my wife just left to go do some shopping.  She said it was way too hot out here” (it was 99 degrees—so yeah, pretty hot).  He continued by saying, “We are leaving tomorrow and she needs to pick up some souvenirs for the grandkids. “  Nice man, I thought!  And then I proceeded to get myself settled and could hardly wait to get to my book.  Well the man, whom I soon learned his name, as Mike, — was from Chicago, owned his own business, loves to travel, heard all about his family….I mean really this man was a “talker”—and I was pleasant and carried on conversation for a few minutes, then thought, okay, he has to be done—I even got up and went to the pool to “cool off a bit” thinking he’d get the hint and leave me be! But God had other plans!

Sometimes in life, there are just Divine appointments, that truly you have no idea they are about to happen—and maybe in some ways, you might be like myself and want to just be left alone—I mean really—I wanted to just read my book! But as Mike continued to talk with me, I mentioned something like that my hubby and I prayed for our girls to love the Lord and find the path He has set for them—Well that opened a door and Mike’s response to me was “well you’re a praying woman, huh?  Kind of like a Tammy Faye Baker or Jerry Falwell.”  Haha!!!  I burst out loud laughing—well not necessarily like them, but a lady who loves the Lord and wants to spend her life doing what God wants me to do—From that point forward, he begin to share about his experiences with “religion”—which is WAY too long to go into here, but let’s just say, Mike was seeking—but just not sure about things! He wanted so badly to have peace and contentment—He had done it all, achieved great success in business, and etc, but still the inner peace eluded him.

As I began to share about Jesus, he couldn’t stop asking questions—from things he had heard or read, or things he never had understood—it was like so many things I have learned and experienced in my life, just flowed forth.  I was able to speak with a deep love for the Lord and His word became alive in me as I shared it–almost like an out of body experience.  Many times over the next 3 hours, Mike cried—Can you visualize that—a grown man, in his swimsuit—bawling like a baby—in the heat of the day—at a pool in Vegas—SIN CITY, I might add—It was a movement of the spirit like I’ve never seen before! And it was God who did it all!  I was able to pray with that man, Mike, and he asked the Lord to come into his heart and change him from the inside out—to create a new man—and I cried with him as I know that this was the day, that the Lord had planned for Mike’s salvation, all along!  And that He let me be just a small part of that plan! I know in heaven, there must have been great rejoicing, because between Mike and I, we could hardly contain our excitement.  There is nothing sweeter than God claiming one of His own!  I still get all choked up today as I think about it!

Unfortunately, his wife never returned, so I didn’t get to meet her.  I told Mike I would be praying for him and encouraged him to get into a church and into the word of the Lord—I gave him my information, if he ever needed to talk!  That was in April and so far, I haven’t heard from him.  He and his wife left Vegas the next day, so I never saw him again!

A Divine Appointment of the Lord—in of all places—Las Vegas!  Who would ever think it!!!  Sometimes what happens in Vegas—shouldn’t stay in Vegas! Giving Praise to the Lord!!
